Student Motivation and Profile in First Year
The cohort of first year students who started in September 2024 were surveyed and this is what we found:
Reasons as to why study Chemical Engineering:
84% of students liked Maths and either Chemistry or Physics as subjects.
9% of students where in it for the money as the Chemical Engineering salary is excellent as a graduate.
Note: 6% of students in first year did not study chemistry as a Leaving Certificate subject.
Reasons as to why study Chemical Engineering in MTU
41% of students were given recommendations from Graduates or Undergraduates of the course in MTU.
22% of students were given recommendations from their Guidance Teacher to study this course in MTU.
16% of students perfered a four year degree programme with direct entry.
13% of students were advised from employers in the Biopharma/Pharma industry who they met through STEM events to study this course in MTU.
9% of students felt that MTU was a good fit i.e. liked the culture in MTU in particular the small classes and student-lecture relationship.
Accommodation: where do the students reside whilst in college
78% of students live at home.
22% of students have student accommodation near MTU.

50% of students commute to MTU by train/bus or both.
28% of students drive or get a lift in a car.
