The Role of Chemical Engineers in Sustainability Development
Sustainability is a critical aspect of modern Chemical Engineering, aligning closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations in 2015 and adapted into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Chemical engineers play a pivotal role in developing innovative solutions that promote environmental protection, resource efficiency and social responsibility. By integrating sustainable practices into the designing of processes and products, Chemical Engineers contribute to achieving SDG targets such as clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. Embracing sustainability in Chemical Engineering not only drives positive environmental and social impacts but also fosters long-term economic viability and resilience in the industry. Chemical engineers are at the forefront of shaping a more ssustainable future for generations to come. skills.
We are committed
We are committed to ensure that sustainability aspects are embedded within the curriculum of our Chemical Engineering program. We understand that this is paramount in preparing future engineers for the evolving needs of society and industry. By integrating sustainability impact considerations into modules as well as project work and laboratory work, students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to address complex environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable development. Emphasising on topics such as green chemistry, renewable energy, waste minimisation and life cycle assessment fosters a mindset of environmental and responsible engineering practices.
The Sustainability Hub: An introduction (IChemE)
The Sustainability Hub focuses on four of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – those where chemical engineers play a key role:
SDG 3: Good health and wellbeing
SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
